GOW Katana | Available for Download | (PS3)

Click here for details on our large base mod.

GOW Katana Features:

  • *NEW* Matrix Moves - Low gravity mid-air dodging. See below for full details.
  • *NEW* Default Inventory - Dual-Enforcer, Link Gun, and Avril... no Impact Hammer
  • *NEW* Hover Vehicle Health Boost - Manta and Viper now start with 250 health... usually enough to survive one Avril hit.
  • *NEW* Translocator not included in next/prev weapon cycling... use the circle button on sixaxis.
  • *NEW* Semi-Berserk - Weapon Speed now set to 50% greater than normal... previously it was 80%.
  • *NEW* Keyboard Dodging - If you use mouse and keyboard, you can dodge by double-tapping yout directional keys... just like the PC version.
  • Translocator - It's baaack!. Now you can use either the translocator or hoverboard at any time. On the sixaxis, the circle button brings up the translocator. On keyboard, it is the same as A.S.S.
  • Team Linking - Boost teammates' link gun damage by using your link gun's alt-fire to create a direct link chain like UT2K4.
  • Team Healing - Use link gun alt-fire on teammates to heal them up to 300 health points. Teammate must not be firing a weapon to be healed.
  • Scavenger Boost - Scavenger does much more damage with its bolt weapon and can jump much higher.
  • Fast Hoverboard Remount - Remount your hoverboard without having to wait (stock board makes you wait about 1 second).
  • Superhero - Destroy 3 enemy orbs to receive 30 seconds of super-health (800 pts), super-speed (2x), double-damage, and the ability to fly.
  • Kamikaze Board - Hoverboard moves faster and jumps higher. Push L1 to trigger kamikaze blast. Push R1 to attach to vehicles including other hoverboards.
  • Game Speed + 10% - Same speed as PC version.
  • Dual Enforcers - Two enforcers given from the start.
  • DropItAll - Drop all weapons when you die.
  • Anti-Spawn Camping - Slightly increased invulnerability time when spawning.
  • Anti-Idle - 2 Minutes of Idling... Adios
  • AutoHealth x2. Starting health is 150 - Collect super-health pickups to 300

Matrix Moves:

In a nutshell, matrix moves give you more time and control in the air. Once you jump into the air, gravity effects you less than it normally does and you have 3 jump boosts plus 3 air dodges. Jump boosts are just like double jumping... press the jump button again to boost your height... except you get 3 jump boosts (like a quad-jump) and you can boost any time you're in the air rather than having to do it near the peak of your jump.

Air dodges thrust you in various directions while you're in the air with even more speed than a jump boost. You can dodge to the left, right, up, or down... note that non-lateral dodging is up and down, not forward and back. How you perform each air dodge depends on whether you use the a keyboard or controller. With a keyboard, you simply double-tap one of directional keys... like normal dodging on the PC. With the controller however, you have so called "smart dodging" which is Epic's poor excuse for dodging on consoles. Press jump while the left analog stick is all the way forward to dodge up, all the way back to dodge down, and so on. I find it very tricky to air dodge on a controller but I normally use a keyboard anyway so my coordination in that regard is sub-par.

Finally, you can hover in mid-air for up to 7 seconds. To begin hovering, press the feign death button (now finally you have a good use for that). To end hovering, press the feign death button again. Once you end hovering, you will resume traveling in whatever direction and speed you had when you started. Keep in mind that you can only hover once per jump and you can only do it for 7 seconds at the most.

HINT #1: To move quickly through the air, get on your hoverboard, gather up speed, jump, get off your hoverboard while you are still in mid-air, and perform jump boosts to gain height when needed. You will carry your forward speed as long as you do normal jump boosts and you can steer your flight left and right. Be careful not to do a forward air dodge though, you'll gain more height than a jump boost but it will slow you down.

HINT #2: When in heavy combat, save your last air dodge for the trip down. Otherwise you'll be left in a slow decent back to the ground... an easy target.

HINT #3: Use mid-air hovering when you need to do some sharp shooting from a lofty vantage point.

Special thanks to A.S.S. Poker for sharing his Matrix source code with me. Be sure to check out the A.S.S. gaming web site and try out the A.S.S. warfare server next time you play on PC!

Katana Stylee

This mod is hellified fun, just tried it out and it rocks!!!  Didn't try the jump down trick tho, that will help with the slo-mo descents for sure.  I will attempt to learn it fluidly on the controller rather than get a keyboard, I think.  We'll see if yall start kicking my ass too much with keyboard, I may just change my mind.  Plays just like the A.S.S. server, Death From Above!

katana bug fixes

Noot & Gesic,

I just uploaded a bug fix update for Katana. Hopefully now you will be able to combine jumps and dodges in any order (previously you had to do your jumps first, then your dodges). Also now hopefully landing on your hoverboard will reset your multijumps on client machines... previously that only worked for single player and listen server hosts.

Yea, I think that's possible... maybe we'll try that in a future release. First I want to fix the bug that you feign death if you accidentally try to pause mid-air a second time. I really should map pausing to a different function because the feign death function that I had to replace also gets called when the Darkwalker farts so now if a Darkwalker farts on you while you're jumping you'll just pause there and take a long whiff ;-)

tele-orb-return

What do you guys think of hitting the enemy orb carrier with your teleporter disc to make the orb return? It is easier than a telefrag and doesn't kill the enemy. It just instantly returns the orb.

NAh that doesnt seem like a good idea. why dont u make the orb carrier just more vulnerable like on the ass server? 1 bullet from the enforcer knocks the orb right out the carriers hands. But if the orb falls out you can still grab it and keep going with it. Also pacer I think it might be a good idea to tune the weapon speed back up to 65 or 70% with the katana mod. It will make it more tolerably to the noobs and people who arent used to it yet. It just to hard to get a quick kill now. Either that or we need a close range weapon added to our arsenal. what do u think siiir?

I didnt realize i was under admin. This is Nootacle node if u didnt know already

I'm sick of spray-n-prey. Maybe I should just bring player health back down to 100 and get rid of autohealth. I'm more interested in finding new ways to make each shot count.

With the orb dropping on A.S.S., usually the carrier just picks it up again immediately without even having to change course... as soon as it is dropped it is picked up again. That's why I wanted to try something else. It is not easy to hit a fast moving target with your teleporter... you have to be expecting him and know where he's coming from.

I was thinking about increasing the power of the enforcers for close range combat. They already seem to be the weapon of choice for some people.

Also, the tricky thing is keeping the mod size down. Certain weapons, like the Avril, will bloat the mod by 500K if you try to tweak them. The link gun bloated it by about 200K. That's why I was looking to tweak the teleporter... it's already part of the mod.

bringing player health back down would help. i would keep autohealth though... regeneration is pretty slow.

What he said

Agreed.  Drop health back to 100.  Boost enforcers short range damage.  Teleporter idea sounds like a good idea-worth a try.  I too am getting sick of spray-N-pray.  I'm not even religious - no good at praying...only preying on others.

enforcer

What did you guys think of the enforcer mods last night? I liked it. It was still tough to kill moving targets but at least now it was possible and you could certainly make a person pay for standing still.

I'm sorry if I didn't get a chance to tell everyone but I made the enforcer more accurate, gave it a 5 shot burst secondary fire (as opposed to 3), took away dual enforcers from the start, and reduced the amount of aiming help it gives you.

Enforcer....

Sorry I didn't really notice.... I still have my weapons so the link gun is my "best weapon" from back when you could kill a tank in 30 seconds with it (last week). I noticed no dual enforcers, but I didn't really use it, and I didn't know to pay attention to it. Plus I was trying to master my Ninja Sky Moves, but Tekniec kept dropping me out or the sky like He was playing Nintendo Duck Hunter! Fun though! Also, every time you guys went to that map nobody else has, I got kicked.

the old fashioned way

you can get your dual enforcers the old fashioned way... earn them... not hard when you've got drop-it-all.

a single enforcer has no effect on people with these mods. i thought the point of changing them was to make it easier to take people down when they're flying through the air.

did you try the secondary fire? it bursts out five quick shots... enough to kill someone at full health if you hit with all five.

yup

it would work if you were right next to someone standing still. last night i recall shooting and hitting someone 3x in mid air with the alt fire and nothing happened... it was at close range too. i guess not all 5 bullets made contact... thats why 2 enforcers are perfect. i mean you might as well be using a sniper rifle... its mad hard trying to hit someone in mid air and kill them in a single burst.
